We are sending a team of orthotists to Uganda to support the local rehabilitation service for people who suffer from Polio. In the UK Polio has been eradicated but in developing countries it remains a major problem. Put simply Polio results in paralysis of limbs resulting in individuals not being able to support themselves, therefore becoming very reliant on the family network. Often these individuals fall in to extreme poverty. Our project is to supply Rehabilitative Orthoses to the individuals offering them the chance to not fall in to this extreme poverty trap. We are working with an expert team of economists from NottinghamUniversity who will monitor the exact effect of the orthotic input on the local economy.
