At the end of May some 300 of us will be cycling from Sword Beach in Normandy, visiting various battlefields over five days, covering 350 miles before arriving back at the Horseguards Parade in London. Our collective target is to raise at least £6 million for Help for Heroes (visit www.helpforheroes.org.uk) To persuade me to coat myself in lycra and then cycle on an excruciatingly tiny saddle for five days, you will realise that it has to be for a good cause. Help for Heroes seeks to raise money to provide rehabilitation care, sadly underfunded by the Government, for those injured in current conflicts, most particularly Afghanistan and Iraq. With my eldest son, Tom, a captain in the Gurkhas having recently returned from Afghanistan, I am more than ever aware of the dangers faced by our soldiers. Deaths might warrant a few lines in the national press, horrendous injuries rarely get a mention. Recognising that death or injury are risks that a professional soldier accepts, it is nevertheless our collective obligation to ensure that proper facilities are available to care for the injured and their families. If this strikes a chord and you wish to contribute to what I believe is a truly worthwhile cause, please give generously by sending me a cheque payable to Help for Heroes or using the Sponsor Us Now link above. As a registered charity, Help for Heroes will receive £1.28 for every £1 donated. Furthermore, our family charity, the Tuppen Charitable Trust, will match £ for £ all donations received. Many thanks
