On Thursday 25th March I donated a kidney at Sheffield's to my Dad who suffered renal failure in November 2008. Following the operation I am joining a group of friends and work colleagues in training for and completing the 'Bupa Great Manchester Run' on Sunday 16th May - just 7 weeks after the operation. The run was organised when the operation was due to take place in January!

I want to do this to give something back to everyone who has helped my Dad through his illness, give myself a target during my recovery, raise money to fund further research into treatment, raise the awareness of kidney disease and transplantation and show that donors can make a full and speedy recovery. The 5 days I spent on a renal ward as the only person without a kidney illness was an eye-opening experience. I spoke to many different patients about their illnesses and the impact on their lives. It has only made me more determined to raise both funds and awareness for the people I met.

There is a major shortage of donors in the meaning many patients do not live long enough to receive a transplant. A successful transplant gives seriously ill people the opportunity to lead a full and normal life. You can join the Organ Donor Register by visiting www.uktransplant.org.uk.

We have set ourselves the huge challenge of raising £10,000 for the charity to help support their research into the treatment of kidney disease. We are calling it the 'Ten4Ten Challenge' as we set out to run 10km to raise £10k. We need your support in order to achieve this. If you want to hold your own event to raise funds towards our target please get in touch. I will post all of your efforts on this page.

Before we launched the Justgiving website we received the following donations on the Kidney Research site which are counted on here as offline donations...

The Longley's £20 - Jodi, James & Joel £20 - Karen Botham £20 - Shona Rowan £40 - Richard Stephenson £40 - Angie&Elaine £10

We have also received offline donations from the following people...

Lisa Short  - Dr Sonil Kalia - RBS Community Investment - B Braun Medical

Thank you,
Chris Cannings
