Story
There were an estimated 46.8 million people worldwide living with dementia in 2015. This number will almost double every 20 years, reaching 74.7 million in 2030 and 131.5 million in 2050. Much of the increase will be in developing countries.*
Scientists at the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Dementia Prevention (http://centrefordementiaprevention.com/). are leading global efforts to understand and protect brain health, for a future without dementia. With your help, we believe it will be possible to prevent this devastating disease.
A list of items that our fundraising will support:
- £25: genetic analysis for a research participant to check whether they carry the APOE4 gene, associated with an increased risk of dementia.
- £100: a full cognitive examination to assess the brain function of someone taking part in our PREVENT Dementia study.
- £250: one tube of antibody to investigate changes in synapses, or cell connections, in human brain samples.
- £500: a detailed MRI scan.
- £1000: stipend for a student to work in a lab for a month in the summer to participate in dementia research .
our support will really help us smash our target and support vital research.
We are “The IS Crowd”:
- Andrew Gleeson (Applications) running leg 1: The Royal Leg – 8.3 miles. His goal is to run fast and not stop until he’s found Billy.
- Billy Wardrop (LTW) running leg 2: The Cock & Pan Leg – 5.5 miles. His goal is to try not follow the Half Marathon runners to the finish line after just 1k and steal the glory!
- Stratos Filalithis (LTW) running leg 3: The Gosford Leg – 8 miles. His goal is to run without looking confused as his start and finish points are the same!
- Thalia Nikolaidou (Applications), running leg 4: The Glory Leg – 4.4 miles. Her goal is to make it to the finish line, as she’ll be doing so for the whole team.
Thank you!!
