When cancer took my Mum away from me I decided to channel my grief into something positive. Losing her will forever leave a void in my life, which I am unable to fill. I know I can never bring her back but I will continue to ensure she is always a part of my life. To honour her and to enable her legacy to live on, I wanted to focus my energy into making a difference and making her proud. My Mum was a truly selfless person and not only a wonderful mother, but my best friend.
Mum was moved to the Princess Alice hospice in the final days of her battle against cancer. My family and I were overwhelmed by the help and support The Princess Alice provided us with. The emotions we were experiencing at the time meant that we could not comprehend just how precious and invaluable the care which Mum was to receive would be. The service provided by the hospice meant that we could put all our energy into spending the time with Mum and making the most of the time we had left with her, without any rules or regulations of a hospital. In reflection, we can now really appreciate what a blessing The Princess Alice hospice is. Their personable approach, care and kindness knew no bounds, and transformed Mum’s last days on earth into the best they could be in the situation.
Right until the end, Mums thoughts were of other people. She saw the work that the hospice did and was determined to live on through me and all whose lives she touched, by ensuring that everyone is made aware of what the hospice does for people. She insisted that at her funeral no flowers were bought, but that donations should be made to the Princess Alice Hospice. Mum raised over £2,700 for this well deserving charity in just one afternoon.
After learning that it costs an astonishing £16,000 per day to keep this amazing hospice running, my family, friends and I have been filled with the determination to embark on “The £16k Challenge” and raise £16k in 12 months. But we need your help. It is hard to believe that the NHS provides a mere 25% of its funding and the remaining 75% is funded by the likes of you and me. Without us, the hospice will struggle and this amazing resource will not be available for the most deserving of people, which could be your loved ones.
The care, love and support that this hospice provides needs our help, so please
