Story

                                            IN MEMORY OF MY NAN

Since taking on this challenge, my Nan has now passed away but my wish is that all the money will go to giving others hope.  She was the bravest, funniest, most beautiful person you could wish to meet and this page now commemorates all that her life meant to me.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us.

   WE DID IT!!!

Since Christmas 2014 I'd been planning this trek and now I can finally say, 'I've done it'!!!

We started really early and it was so peaceful on the mountain.  Right from the start it was steep and our rucksacks felt madly heavy.  We reached a ford with beautiful cascades and we cooled ourselves by splashing freezing water on the back of our necks.  JoJo dabbled across warily.  From there we trudged up a relentless staircase of rock in baking heat.  It reminded me of Lord of the Rings.  At a place called Hollow Stones we look the adventurous path beneath looming crags heading for Mickledore and a scramble on hands and knees on loose scree.  A giant flapjack gave us the energy to head for the summit over ankle breaking granite boulders.  We had to follow cairns to find our way.  At the top we were nearly in cloud and had to put on fleeces against the cold.  We placed our gps on the trig point and the next we realised JoJo had palled up with another canine mountaineer and headed up the summit cairn on his own!!!! The views were amazing.  We saw fighter jets scream through the valley below and we were buzzed by a rescue helicopter doing training.

After that we discovered that coming down was nearly as hard as going up and our legs were soon jelly.  We had hysterics at the bottom when Dad turned into marshmallow man with wobbly legs.  We were so pleased that we'd achieved such a feat.  However, while we were celebrating with a paddle in Wastwater I discovered I had left my camcorder 3/4 of the way up.  Guess what we did the next day?  We climbed it again and amazingly it was still there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The other part of my challenge was to collect litter on the fell but I am overjoyed to say that there wasn't any! How happy Mum was.  We found two banana skins and that was it.  Well done walkers :0)

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE WHO HAVE ENCOURAGED US AND BEEN SO GENEROUS WITH DONATIONS, TOGETHER WE'VE MADE A REAL DIFFERENCE

Elliott

Hello,

My name is Elliott and I am 12 years old. In July I am going to climb Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England with my dog JoJo (and my parents!) but along the way I am also going to pick up the horrible litter that careless tourists leave behind.

I have chosen to do this trek in honour of my Nanny beause she is the bravest person I know. Every day she has to climb her own personal mountain because she suffers from Myeloma.  She puts up with endless horrible drugs and rarely complains so I wanted to do something that reflects her resilience and fighting spirit.  Also she is looked after by an amazing team of Doctors at Bournemouth Hospital who are trialing pioneering treatment.   I want to raise as much money as possible so they can carry on the research that is giving me all the precious extra years with her.

When I researched my adventure we found some articles about how careless trekkers were leaving litter on the fell. Some people climb it to 'conquer' it rather than to enjoy it.  My Mum was really upset because, since 4 years old when she climbed her first mountain, she has loved Lakeland thanks to my Nan and Pops who inspired in her this passion for wild places. So my motto is going to be 'trek in trash out'.

I would be extraordinarily grateful if you choose to donate even a tiny amount because we can send a message to my Nan that shows her she is not making her journey alone.
