Story

24 Peaks in 24 hours (or three get lost in the Lake District)

Three intrepid athletes (!) from the Charlbury Group are undertaking a great challenge for a great cause this year.

Paul Duckworth, Thiago Pereira and Dave Ford are tackling the 24 Peaks in 24 hours challenge with 2 nights of wild camping in the Lake District.

The Challenge:

We will be camping in the Lake District on day 1. At early dawn of day 2 we will set off, walking throughout the day, up and down 12 peaks (expected 13 hours of walk), including Scafell Pike! After another night of wild camping we start out day 3 covering another 12 peaks (11 hours of walk) to the end of the challenge.

The reason:

We are fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust UK (CF Trust). This particular charity was chosen as Thiago’s oldest son, William, suffers from Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

This charity provides support to those affect by CF and their families. They invest in high-quality research to bring forward new treatments and work with healthcare professionals to ensure excellent, sustainable care.

To give you an idea of where money will go if you choose to sponsor, the CF Trust will focus its work over the next four years on four key areas:

  • Increasing length of life for those with CF
  • Improving quality of life for those with CF and their families
  • Increasing capacity of CF research and clinical care
  • Expanding awareness of CF and its impact on individuals and families

The Cystic Fibrosis – few bare facts:

Cystic Fibrosis is one of the UK's most common life-threatening inherited diseases and it is caused by a faulty gene that which affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus.

  • Over 9,000 people in the UK have Cystic Fibrosis.
  • If two carriers have a child, the baby has a 1 in 4 chance of having Cystic Fibrosis.
  • Over two million people in the UK carry the faulty gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis - around 1 in 25 of the population.
  • Each week, five babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis.
  • Each week, two young lives are lost to Cystic Fibrosis.
  • Currently half of the CF population will live past 41.7 years of age, and improvements in treatments mean a baby born today is expected to live even longer.

You can find more information about the CF Trust at http://www.cftrust.org.uk/

I hope you are able to help us fundraise for this worthy cause and help all those affected by cystic fibrosis and their families.

Thank you!
