I don't have a personal story - yet - but I can't discount it for the future. After watching a documentary on the lives of young carers a couple of years ago I remember being profoundly moved about how resilient and mature the young people were and how they seemed disinclined to dwell on the obvious unfairness of their situations. I also remember feeling slightly ashamed because the sacrifices that they were being pressured to make at such an early stage in their young lives made my own problems seem trivial in comparison.

Later, on turning 51 (I don't what happened at 50) I found myself wanting to rekindle my fast-fading athletic ambitions. I was keen to develop my own challenge rather than enter an organised race but the result was, on the face of it, hopelessly over-ambitious. However rather than water it down, I decided that I needed to supplement my own motivational reserves and recalled the persistence and resilience that those young people showed and realised that some of that could work for me.

Although I've competed in many races over the years I've never done one for a charity and am really pleased to have teamed up with Carers Trust for this personally monumental effort. Carers Trust represents and supports the special people in society that sacrifice their own ambitions to care for those that they love. I really think that without organisations like them, the term 'care' could become just another four-letter word!
