Virgin London Marathon 2013 · 21 April 2013 ·

At Activity Alliance, we believe that everyone belongs in sport and physical activity. Yet, disabled people remain the least active in our society. Our strategy, We All Belong, drives meaningful change by tackling the biggest challenges disabled people face when trying to be active in sport.

As many of you know, I've been a fair-weather runner for some time now and run for leisure when I can find the mental motivation, pushing myself occasionally with own personal targets. In 2011 I decided it was time to attempt my first half marathon and, with a little reluctance, entered myself into the Plymouth half marathon. A lot of people say I am designed to run and I now feel it is time to stop procrastinating and take the bull by the horns (I am extremely nervous!).

I am an able bodied person who, at times, takes my health and body for granted. I want to run a marathon, break through my mental barrier of self-belief, to raise money for those who don't have the choice of being able to take their body and health for granted. As a child it was my uncle, Mike, who inspired me and continues to inspire me to take on this challenge. Mike, who has cerebral palsy, has always pushed himself and lives an active life. Despite his disability, he never fails to amaze me, and in recent years sky-dived from a plane for charity.

I will be running for the English Federation of Disability Sport. There are around 11 million disabled people in the UK. Less than two in ten disabled people in England are taking part in sport. The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) was established in September 1998 as the national body and charity dedicated to disabled people in sport throughout England. They work closely with a number of key partners to improve and increase the opportunities offered, ensuring disabled people have a memorable experience of sport and physical activity. Their partners include the National Disability Sport Organisations and National Governing Bodies of sport.

Having never fund-raised before I hope to raise as much as I possible can to support my chosen charity. Everyone- children, adults, bodied or non-bodied, have the right to engage in physical activity and I intend on using my own body to support my belief!
