At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My story: Hi, I'm 17 years old and am raising money for Alzheimer's society as our family is affected by dementia. In late 2009, my nan, or Nanny Pat as I have always called her started to forget certain things, at first it wasn't anything much of concern, however in December '09, she was beginning to show signs of dementia and thus, unfortunately she was diagnosed with it. This was hard to understand as I was only 14 at the time, however I quickly realised the severity of dementia, and have understood what cruel this is. We began to look for carehomes at the turn of the year while my grandad, Stan stayed a stalwart figure and continued to look after her. However, Stan could not cope after a few months due to age as his health was now beginning to deteriorate and so Pat was placed in a carehome in Spring 2010, we as a family knew this was the best thing however my grandad found it hard to let go after being married to the woman of his life for 56 years. In November 2011, Pat got up one night and unfortunately broke her hip, thankfully this was fixed however as a result of the dementia, Pat can now no longer walk. Despite Stan not giving up in hope that she'll walk again, we know she won't.

Thankfully at writing this, Pat is still with us however it hurts to think of her as I only see her once a month due to the distance away that she lives, along with grandad. As part to lead the way in eventually finding a cure for Alzheimer's in the future, I have decided to enter a charity bike ride in my local town of which spans 62 miles and every single penny raised will be for people like my Nanny Pat.

Please donate what you can to stop families going through the pain of watching someone with dementia, some time in the future.
