Please sponsor The Periwinkles in their latest fixture (left) against The University of Birmingham Old Boys.
This match was prompted by the joining of a new member to our squad - Marcus Main, who is studying for his PhD at the University. Marcus was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in March 2007 and underwent 6 months of the routine ABVD intensive chemotherapy.
Unfortunately the disease relapsed late in 2007 and after 2 operations, 2 lots of ESHAP and a miniBEAM conditioning regime he underwent a Stem Cell transplant with BEAM/Campath chemo in March this year receiving donor cells from his younger brother Bernie (16), who also hopes to play for The Periwinkles one day.
The cells took nicely and Marcus is now off immune-suppressants although his formerly straight ginger hair has come back brown/blond and curly!!
Marcus is back in training with Harborne RFC in preparation for the coming season and am looking forward to his big comeback fixture for The Periwinkles against all his old playing compatriots from the University of Birmingham RFC where he spent 5 years playing and he still works in the chemistry labs researching for his PhD.
Marcus found out about the Lymphoma Association when doing some online research into the disease and they put me in touch with Club Captain Karl Thorpe of The Periwinkles.
He is looking forward to making his debut and representing the charity and team and is hoping to become a 'Buddy' for the Lymphoma Association in the near future.
Please support this event, as well as Joe Allison who is participating in a Triathalon soon.
All donations go to the Lymphoma Association, see left for details of the great work they do, funded by you!
