The Shimmy Trek
When a child is diagnosed with cancer it can seem like normal life stops and a different journey begins.
It’s a journey that tests families physically, emotionally, socially and financially.
Every day, 10 families are told the devastating news that their child has cancer. Sean, my cousin was part of a family that discovered just that. He was diagnosed at just 8 years old and it was then that he began his 6 year fight which included constant hospital trips for tests and monitoring of his health. It affected the whole of the family and it became a battle that the family united to fight.
Sean always tried to stay positive and strong and fought until the very end- it is because of his strong will, thirst for life and un-deniable inspiration, that my partner and I have decided to undergo the challenge in seans honour to fundraise throughout 2009 we will undergo any challange in order to raise money for 'Rays of Sunshine' Seans chosen charity
Listed below is a current list of the latetest fund raising events however our main event for this year will be:
A sponsored trek across Kenya which will conclude with the assent of Mount Kenya , our expedition starts at the southern end of the Masai Mara in south west Kenya. The area, named after its traditional inhabitants “the Masai” , is famed for its massive animal migrations from July to September where 1.3 million animals migrate north for the winter period each year…With the help of our Masai guides it is our intention to trek across the Serengeti following the migration Our initial trek will last for approximately 10 days and will include traversing cliffs, trekking through forests and dangerous river crossings…We will walk for up to 10 hours per day until we reach our final destination “MOUNT KENYA”….After a days acclimatisation We start our 3 day trek to the summit, arriving at Lenana point , (Kenya’s highest trekable peak 5000m).
Before we lost Sean he requested that all funds raised from this trek to go to the charity that he gained most from throughout his journey- ‘Rays of sunshine’-
‘Rays of Sunshine Children's Charity exists to grant the wishes of children who are living with serious or life-threatening illnesses between the ages of 3-18 who live in the United Kingdom. With your help they and their families can experience the joy and excitement of doing something they've only ever dreamt of before. Help us turn wishes into happy memories.’
All your donations are tax free and eligible for gift aid, so please give generously to a charity that makes so many children enjoy the best of what they have been given.
