Story
For those that don't already know, our beautiful little toddler Molly was admitted to hospital in January with what was suspected to be something as simple as infected chicken pox. The reality was that Molly had contracted Invasive Group A Streptococcul infection which made it's way to her blood, 1 in 4 who contract this, die. Molly spent a week in hospital on a course of very stong IV antibiotics and though it was a tough time for all the family, thankfully Molly made a full and speedy recovery.
The whole ordeal set me thinking that I could do something to raise money for people who have to go through what we did, and much worse.
I have decided to raise money for a charity called Group B Strep support, who help prevent Group B streptococcus infections in newborn babies. It's similar to what Molly had but affects newborn babies.
Group B streptococcus (GBS) is the UK’s most common life-threatening infection in newborn babies. Without preventative medicine, GBS infects approximately 700 babies annually, 75 die and 40 survivors suffer long-term problems. Most GBS infections are preventable. Group B Strep Support inform pregnant women and health professionals how to prevent infection and save tiny lives.
To raise money for this worthy cause I have come up with a three stage challenge for myself.
Part One: Great Manchester 10K Run on 17th May. (DONE - 52min8secs)
Part Two: On May 31st I'll be taking on the Sundog Cheshire Sprint triathlon, 500m swim, 20K ride, 5k run. (DONE - 1hr 23mins)
Part Three: Finally, I'll be taking on the famous Great North Run, a half marathon in Newcastle on September 20th.
Having never run more than 7 miles and not being a strong swimmer or cyclist, it's a bit of a change of lifestyle for me over the next few months. I'm already in training and looking forward to it (kind of!)
Emma will be joining me on the Manchester 10K and the Great North, so if you know her and not me, sponsor too!
The great news is that my employers, KELLOGG'S, have generously agreed to match the first £500 raised. I will be updating the "amount raised offline" periodically to reflect this generous contribution.
I know money is tight at the moment and there are lots of fundraising events out there but please give generously to help save the lives of newborn babies.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Group B Strep Support gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
Thanks all
Mike/Sned
