The Three Peaks Abseil · 28 October 2009

Fire Fighters Charity provides care and support to the UK’s fire family. It helps with any health and wellbeing challenges firefighters, control staff, and everyone working in – or retired from – the UK’s fire services, as well as their families, may face - during and after service

Story

On Wednesday 28th October 2009, 13 members of the White Watch from Tollcross Fire Station in Edinburgh, will attempt to ascend and descend, on ropes, the accumulative height of the three peaks.  This will take place, not in a remote area of the British Isles but at the Sheraton Hotel in Edinburgh.

For all you non walkers/climbers out there, the three peaks are the highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis, 1344m), England (Scafell Pike, 978m) and Wales (Snowdon, 1,085m).  That is a grand total of 3,407m to ascend and descend!

We are carrying this out to raise money for The Firefighter's Charity and Ewan Williamson's Trust Fund.

Ewan tragically lost his life while fighting a fire in a pub and tenement building in Edinburgh in July of this year.  He was a true friend and colleague and as he also worked from Tollcross Fire Station, we would like to raise as much as we can for his trust.

Every year, thousands of firefighters are injured whilst protecting the public.  Every 30 seconds in the UK, firefighters are called to an incident, putting their lives on the line and often sustaining physical injuries whilst carrying out their duties.  The Fire Fighter's Charity is there for firefighters during their times of need and assists over 13,500 individuals every year, by providing pioneering treatment and support services.

It costs over £9 million every year to keep the Charity running and with no government funding, they are completely reliant upon donations from the general public and fire community.

There will no doubt be a few aches and pains, not only on the day but for some time afterwards, but I'm sure that you will agree that it is a small price to pay and it is for a truly worthwhile cause.

So if you feel the need, please dig deep and give generously.

On behalf of the White Watch Tollcross Fire Station, thankyou.
