Leonard Cheshire Disability supports over 21,000 disabled people in the UK and works in 55 countries around the world. We campaign for change and provide innovative services that give disabled people the opportunity to live life their way. Our services are wide ranging and include day and residential care homes, care at home, resource centres, rehabilitation, respite care and training and assistance for those looking for work. International services include inclusive education for disabled children, training and research to aid recovery in post-conflict and post-disaster countries, and improving access to advice and small business loans. Campaigning is a very important part of our work. Our Creature Discomforts campaign aims to challenge the way people think about and respond to disability in order to remove the barriers faced by disabled people. Registered Charity Number 218186

UPDATE 6th July 2009

Our First Fundraiser!

And we thought running marathons was hard - try organising parties! Many thanks to all of you who attended our Independence Day fundraiser on 4th July at Shine in Harehills. Sixty special people had a great night and many new dance moves were spotted as the night wore on. Initial indications are that we have raised c.£1000, and we await the final numbers from accounts. If you couldn't make it, it's not too late to donate to Leonard Cheshire on this page. Thanks again!

UPDATE 28th April 2009

That's the hardest thing we ever did.

We set off too fast, did our fastest ever first half, and boy did we pay during the 2nd half! The planned sub-4 hour finish went out the window as we picked our way past cramp victims and unconscious runners being tended with oxygen masks. The miles just got longer and longer and we could hardly believe it when the finish line finally appeared. We dug deep on the hottest day this year so far by thinking of our friends and families, and how we couldn't let ourselves and our sponsors down by dropping out.

Although we've finished the race, we haven't finished the job - we still have alot more money to raise. So now we really need your help - if you haven't sponsored us already please donate here.

Also look out for a big party fund-raiser (now re-scheduled for Saturday 4th July at 7:30pm) - invite coming your way soon.

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.

We promised to do something else after the Great North Run, and so Todd and Martin are off to the London Marathon. Brave, motivated or mad - you decide!

We run for Leonard Cheshire because its such an inspirational charity. Did you know that Leonard Cheshire himself was a word war 2 pilot who won Britains most respected medal, the Victoria Cross, for bravery. He flew from just down the road at RAF Driffield for much of the war. After the war, he could have had a very comfortable life, but instead he opened his own home to convalescents and the terminally ill and learned to be a nurse - personifying the expression "charity begins at home".

The charity he started now runs a network of homes - Martin got involved through our local Leonard Cheshire home at Wetherby, and supporting their Ready to Start scheme which aims to help disabled people start their own businesses.

We're also running for Todd's mum, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer - Todd has sent her every T-shirt from his runs so far.

So please help us on our long (and probably painful) journey round London by making a donation below.
