Clipper Round the World Yacht Race · 10 July 2013

Link International Innovation supports creative and innovative education and health care projects in UK and worldwide. It gives young people the chance to experience life in Uganda. There they build friendships that have the power to transform entire communities through innovative collaboration.

Story

Here I am back on dry land - the homecoming was the most amazing day - one of the real highlights of the trip - to parade up the Thames and be greeted by family and friends on the spectator boats was fantastic, then as one of the 3 winning boats to have the honour of Tower Bridge opening for us to pass through was incredible.   Then the crowds - well I have never known anything like it - Wow!

The icing on the cake is that my target has been raised - so thanks to absolutely everyone for helping me to fundraise for this fantastic cause - my sponsorship is going to be matched by a bank, so the more I can raise the more we can all help with the fantastic work of Link International.

Read why below.....

I was lucky to go to St David’s College, Llandudno and whilst there found out about John Njendahayo (an OD) and his work in Uganda, where the main causes of mortality in the under 5s are diarrhoea, malaria and pneumonia.

In July 2009 I spent 16 intense days building, visiting schools and communities in Uganda, by the end of the trip I could even make bricks! As I left that beautiful sun baked place I thought to myself – I would like to do more to help.

John and his team have been working in Uganda for over 20 years making things happen.

The main focus is on health care. Top of the list is the current development of an Integrated Medical Hub, which when proved can be rolled out across Uganda.

By taking part in a leg of the Clipper 13/14 round the world yacht race I am facing my biggest challenge yet.  Clipper is a race for amateurs, some have sailed before, some not  - 12 yachts, sponsored by various international cities race around the world taking a year to complete the race.  The Skippers are professionals, but the crews all amateurs.  Some take part in the whole race, some in a leg or two - Me?  I'm taking part in Leg 7 and leg 8 - the final two legs, from San Francisco to Panama Canal to Jamaica to New York across to Northern Ireland, then Europe and back to the home port in the UK - a full month at sea - then the Homecoming, if last year's is anything to go by  - an amazing culmination of an amazing year!

I've sailed dinghies for years, but a 70 foot ocean going racing yacht......No!!  An enormous challenge for me - I'm in the middle of training, which consists of sailing around 2,000 miles off the south coast of the UK, just to get us in the mood!  I'm learning so much and cannot wait to set off on my adventure across the Atlantic.  Please help me to raise as much as possible to help the projects out in Uganda!  Please dig deep for this great charity and to spur me on!

The 13/14 Clipper race set off in September last year - Here we are in May 2014 and I have started legs 7 & 8.  You can follow the progress of Team Great Britain and the rest of the fleet on https://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/  Follow us and cheer us on.

The homecoming is on 12th July at St Katherine's Dock in London - welcome boats will be coming out to join the yachts as they process back into London - join us if you can!
