We want to listen to the views of the Beaver Lake Cree Nation in order to understand how they are being affected, positively and negatively, and how we can work with them to understand how the tar sands are affecting their lives and to see how UK students can work together with youth trying to raise awareness about the true impacts of tar sands development.

During our visit, we will be lucky enough to experience some of the local culture (and participate in local ceremonies, such as 'Pow Wow'), take a look at the area (tar sands and pristine wilderness), meet people who are already campaigning against the Tar Sands (IEN amongst others)... The area covered is approximately that of England and Wales combined. This oil is no ordinary oil - it's bitumen, sand, clay and other traces... It's cold and it has to have steam pumped into it to make it flow so it can be extracted, refined, upgraded, refined, upgraded... First Nations communities are being affected by these developments. Their hunting, fishing and trapping rights are being threatened. Their communities are having to work in the oil industry to get by (a fork-lift truck driver reportedly earns around $100k/yr) and there has been an increase in cancers and other diseases. The pristine boreal forest is being ripped up. Up to 2 barrels of natural gas and 4 barrels of water are required to create 1 barrel of oil. Expansion: 1.5 million barrels per day now --> 7 million barrels per day in 2030.

Perhaps the most worrying thing is CETA - this is anl agreement proposed between Canada and the EU. It will allow oil from the tar sands to be used in the EU for the first time. One clause suggests that companies from Canada or the EU will be able to sue if they are unable to operate due to environmental issues.

We want to raise £2500 by the end of the year...
