The human tragedy unfolding and escalating in Syria, and in the refugee camps in Syria's neighbours, however, is one of those rare things I will run for. The money raised for Khayr at the Bupa Great Manchester 10k will go towards providing funds, resources and support for those in need regardless of religion, ethnicity, gender or age.

Khayr are helping with a Generation Freedom project to provide schools for some of the 2.8 million Syrian children now out of school as a result of the crisis. Projects like this are often forgotten about, especially in the midst of the headline-grabbing perils of bombings, disease and malnutrition. By failing to provide children with an education, we risk allowing the damage done by conflict to last for a lifetime.
