Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I swore I wouldn't do this. My first thought on finishing both the half marathons I've completed to date was 'a full marathon is that, again. No way'. I've said it out loud many a time. I probably still agree with the sentiment, but there has always been something nagging away saying 'why not'? And this is the thing that running has done for me, save for giving me the leeway to eat more crisps, above all else. Not to listen to those thoughts along the lines of 'nah, you can't do that. That's not possible'. Given that running for more than 5 minutes at a time was impossible 18 months ago, I've lost a lot of respect for these artificial boundaries that my tendency towards wallowing in negativity sets for me.
To this end, I will be running the Stockholm Marathon on 2 June 2012 in aid of The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a fantastic charity which is dedicated to the prevention of male suicide. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 35 in the UK and 3 out of every 4 suicides are male. CALM's mission is to to inspire, to ‘reset’ male stereotypes so that we can live our lives without bowing to the expected, and be free, as individuals and as a society, of the nonsensical notions that a man who does not discuss his emotions is somehow 'strong' and that admitting you are having trouble is a sign of weakness. It is not, and I am proud to support CALM in their attempts to spread this message to as many people as possible.
And here comes the bit I can't dress up. Any small amount of money that you are able to donate in support of CALM will be hugely appreciated, by myself and those at CALM, and will act as additional inspiration for me as I pound the streets in the three months leading up to the big day.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Many thanks, and much love.
