Story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
Ive been running for just over 3 years and on the fells just a year. I entered the short class of the Welsh 1000m peaks, a gruelling 8 mile run from ogwen finishing on the summit of Snowden. Im doing this in memory of Stephen Young who sadly passed away in early may. He was a great teacher of history and friend to many including my mum.
My Race report.
To start i cant navigate very well its a fact just like i cant run very fast. About 70 keen runners started from Ogwen. Up the climb on the side of Tryfan i consilidated myself into a solid 3rd place with the leaders 30s ahead and the chasers about 2 minutes behind. Then i got onto the moor. I had to find a checkpoint on the miners track and i could noit see more than 10m ahead. I sat on a rock for an hour in the driving rain argueing with my compass which way was north (silly me). Eventually after an hour i got my act together and singlehandedly navigated myself to the checkpoint. I had lost all my places and was 2nd to last. On the drop into Pen-Y-Pass i navigated well and thoroughly enjoyed the fast rocky running even in the atrocious weather. From Pen-Y-Pass just the pyug track lay ahead. I had done 5 miles or so as the crow flies and nearing 2000ft of ascent already. Steadily i plodded up the pyg track, about half way up the weather was awful, clag down and hailstones driving. A nice woman had to feed me some jelly babies cos my hands were frozen. Some walkers thought it was perfectly funny to send me the wrong way for about a minute before shouting me back. At the top of the pyg track i knew i had to get to garnedd ugain first and descended down the tourist track (last mistake). Eventually i turned back and hit the checkpoint. As i dibbed i turfed the marshalls out of the tent so i could chill for 10 minutes. I got out after a short break and began the final push to snowdon. Finished in 3:13:50 and was greeted at the top with a mix of hypothermia and relief. Jogged back to Llanberis had a kip and waited for Phil and Andy.
All in all an interesting day next year i should do well under 2 hours.
Thanks for all the sponsorship
