Edinburgh Marathon Festival Team Relay 2013 · 26 May 2013 ·

Our mission is to make the discoveries that defeat cancer. Our vision is that people can live their lives free of cancer as a life-threatening disease. We work on all cancer types incl. children's cancers, pancreatic, brain and lung cancer. Please support our work and help us defeat cancer.

Story

We are running in the Edinburgh Marathon as part of a team of 45 runners. We have 13 full marathon runners and 32 relay team members that will complete the 26.2 mile course in teams of 4. The team will be fundraising for research into a specific type of malignant childhood brain tumour.

More children die from brain tumours than any other cancer.

Research into childhood brain tumours is massively underfunded.

As a result, improvements in survival rates have not kept pace with other more well funded, well researched childhood cancers.

Nationally, c.1% of cancer research funding is allocated specifically to brain tumours, across adults and children. Childhood cancers react differently to adults yet, in the main, treatment for children follows that of adults, using the same drugs.

The Institute of Cancer Research (“ICR”) carries out research into all cancers. One of their teams, led by Dr Chris Jones, is carrying out work that focuses on gaining more of an understanding of childhood high grade gliomas, a type of malignant brain tumour, with a view to developing new drugs and treatments. Research in this area is significantly under-funded and the ICR has an excellent track record of developing new drugs and treatments.

All funds raised by our team will be specifically allocated to research undertaken by Dr Jones and his team.

Thank you for your donation.
