Story
Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.
As clinicians in the Wessex Cardiac Centre at Southampton General Hospital, we are raising money for the Young Adult Cardiac Ward Appeal which will be officially launched by our supporting charity the Wessex Cardiac Trust (Wessex Heartbeat), in June 2009. The aim is to raise £1.2million to establish a purpose built Young Adult Cardiac Unit adjacent to the current children’s ward.
As keen cyclists, Dr Tony Salmon and I are embarking on an extremely challenging ride from Montellimar in Provence to the top of Mount Ventoux. This arduous 107 mile long 'King of the Mountains' stage from the Tour de France will take us between 10 and 11 hours to complete. My wife, Helle Linnebjerg - a pharmacologist, will be supporting the ride in a car until Sault, where she will be joining us to ride the final 70km up Mount Ventoux.
The success of the past thirty years has resulted in a large number of young adults leading normal lives after treatment in childhood. Some however require ongoing diagnosis and in-patient treatment. There are now approximately 10,000 adults with congenital cardiac problems under regular review in outpatients in our region. On occasion when patients need admission to hospital, our current inpatient facilities do not meet their needs. The new facility will provide a seamless transition from the children’s ward (E1/Ocean Ward) to the adjacent new development (E2 Ward).
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Wessex Cardiac Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
So please sponsor us now! Thank you.
