On the 20 August 2006, I will be taking on the challenge of a lifetime – IRONMAN UK . For the uninitiated this means swimming 2.4 miles in open water, followed by 112 miles on the bike (with over 7500 feet of climbing) and then a full marathon to wrap matter up!! Am I mad? Of course I am - no sane person would ever contemplate such a feat of endurance. Why am I doing it? To raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. My father John died in May 2002 after a prolonged battle with MND.
For the record, on deciding to take up this challenge my background in each of the disciplines was as follows: SWIMMING – Would struggle to complete one length of the pool without drinking most of it!! CYCLING – Not too bad, managed to complete the "London to Brighton" on a raleigh shopper complete with 3 gears and a basket.
RUNNING – One half marathon in 1985 and a few 6 milers.
