On Friday 19 April I will attempt The Appliances Online 24 Hour Challenge & Run non stop for 24 hours around the Newcastle Quayside Carrying a 42kg Smeg Fridge
In 2011 I completed the Great North run whilst carrying a 40kg fridge on my back. I have continued with Fridge Runs since the Great North Run 2011 including The 26.2 miles Marathon of the North, the famous Blaydon race on the 9 June and then ran a 14 mile leg of The Real Relay on June 25 2012.
Then in August 2012 I ran the exact route of the Great North Run every day for 30 days with a 40kg Fridge on my back. I to set off at 6am each day so that people could run with me if they wanted to or cheer me along. Obviously the 30th and final day was the Great North Run proper on the 16th September. I did actually run it again on the following day without the fridge just for fun.
All my previous challenges have taught me that running with a Fridge is going to cause injuries and from day one of this challenge the difference between completing or not completing the challenge will be how I manage the injuries I sustain. I have also learnt that no amount of training can prepare you for friction injuries caused by the constant rubbing of a 6 stone metal box on your back and how that tears off your skin.
The most frightening part of this challenge is the thought of friction burns, which after just one run can leave you in pain for weeks.
I am not afraid to admit that this challenge has me scared, but I believe passionately in the charity I am supporting so I will just have to cope with it.
I am running this year in aid of The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. Like lots of people, I have lost people I love to cancer and like most people I loved Bobby Robson and everything he stood for. I also believe that one day somebody will find a cure, but until then we need to support all the cancer charities in which ever way we can.
My daily blog which is www.therunproject.co.uk this will be live from 18/7/2012
