Story

Precision Approach Radar Engineers (PAR) in training for the Tour De Par in aid of The National Autistic Society, Cancer Research UK and Help For Heroes.

Gary Gibb, from Hamilton, and Marc Nicholson, from Lincoln, both Precision Approach Radar Engineers for Exelis Defence Ltd, are preparing for the challenge of cycling the “Tour De Par” for The National Autistic Society (NAS), the UK’s leading charity for people affected by Autism, Cancer Research UK, the UK’s largest single funder of breast cancer research and Help For Heroes who’s number one aim is to “Remember the fallen and care for the living”.

The Tour De PAR involves both Gary and Marc cycling around all military airfield sites that have a PAR-2000; this is a Precision Approach Radar assisting aircraft in landing in poor weather/visibility or whenever required. There are currently 21 sites around the UK and the event will start from the most northerly site, RAF Lossiemouth, on Friday 26th April at 0800, ending at RNAS Culdrose, including a visit to Exelis Defence Ltd Head Office at Basingstoke. Initial planning shows an approximate distance of 1600 miles and this is aimed to be covered in 8-10 days; this will be achieved on a relay basis with Gary and Marc cycling alternate 50 mile distances, arriving and departing at each site together

Both ex-serving personnel, in the RAF, Help For Heroes was an obvious choice, recognising the brave men and women, past and present, that take no hesitation in putting their lives on the line each and every day for the safety and well being of our country. Exelis Defence Ltd are also strong supporters of our Armed Forces.

The NAS because Marc has a son Kian, aged 7, who is diagnosed with Autism.

Cancer Research UK, Gary lost his father to lung disease, when he was 5, and his mum to breast cancer a few years ago. At 15 Marc lost his father to bowel cancer and at 19 he lost his mum to liver cancer; so to assist the fight against a disease that touches everyone’s life in some way Cancer Research Uk was chosen.
