Transaid Cycle Zambia Challenge 2009

We are proud to welcome 25 enthusiastic participants to the Transaid Cycle Zambia Challenge, a 10-day adventure taking us over 450 km across Zambia to help raise over £100,000 to help change the lives of men, women and children across Africa. 

This journey will start in the capital of Lusaka and will be a challenging mix of tarmac and off-road cycling through traditional Zambian villages.  Participants will even get the chance to see some of Transaid's project first-hand, such as the pioneering Professional Driver Training Project.  Funds raised will go towards this project which aims to reduce the number of road crashes in Zambia, which is the third cause of death after HIV/AIDS and malaria.

Amongst those on the challenge is Wendy Vaughan, HR Services Director of Wincanton, a Transaid member company. She will be joined on the expedition by a group of colleagues calling themselves the ‘Pirates of the Zambian, and who have banded together to raise £30,000 for Transaid in the run up to the challenge.

Commenting on the adventure, Wendy said: “Despite not having ridden a bike for over 15 years and having had to buy a bike to begin training, I've actually started to enjoy cycling! Working on this as a team has been great as we can support and encourage each other, and it's been a really good laugh!”

Also taking part is George Noble, Purchasing & Technical Director of Fraikin. Announcing his decision to join the expedition, George explained: “Transaid is our 'industry charity' and it is good to be able to do something to support it directly. The pace of the event using bikes should bring us into close contact with the people and circumstances we hope to assist.”  Other fundraisers amongst the group include staff from Volvo Trucks, Royal Mail, Bridgestone, ATS Euromaster, Telefonica 02 and JMP Consultants.
