EVEREST Trek for CAFOD
Fundraising for The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD)
Story
Dear All,
My travels have now ended and I did make it. I got to Everest Base Camp at 2.43pm Nepalese time on 24th October 2005. It was tough, really tough. The following day we climbed Kala Pattar the highest point of the trek at 5,545 metres above sea level; where you get the best views of Everest. The people who helped us on the way the porters, the guides - Tilly, Karna and Bhola were fantastic and our trek leader Santosh was a wonderful man who had a sense of fun, even when it was too hard to laugh.
I did find it hard at times, but did not succumb to altitude sickness, apart from being unable to sleep at a certain height. After 3 sleepless nights i took diomox, which did help me sleep, my friend Rob lost his appetite for a couple of days. Everybody on the trek suffered in some shape or form and some did get really sick, but we all made it and it was a fantastic 2 weeks and the scenery, really did take your breath away, literally. Everybody in the group was a good sport and had interesting stories of their other travels.
Finally, I should like to thank all the people who sponsored me and the people who supported me through the physical training and the trek itself, without them, I doubt it would have been possible and raised so much.
Although this was a holiday of sorts and paid for by myself; I had thought about fundraising for CAFOD after booking the trek. The work of CAFOD is in working hand in hand with local people to help them respond to their own real needs and 90% of what is raised goes to where it is destined.
