----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As many of you know our middle son, Ross, was born with epilepsy and has global developmental delay, meaning he cannot talk, sit, walk or do anything for himself, and a visual impairment. He can smile though, and despite being hospitalised twice in the past year, he is on a new cocktail of medication and over this summer has been as chilled-out and content, and sleeping better than he has been since birth - long may it continue!
Looking after Ross is a full-time and demanding role, and he needs lots of special equipment, some of which is provided by social services but anything beyond the basics needs to be self-funded. And anything called 'special-needs' equipment always seems to have a very special (high) price. So when we started looking for a trike for Ross, for him to be able to get out and get some exercise and fresh-air, the costs became an issue.
SCAMPPS is a local charity which supports and puts on events for families of children with special needs and funds equipment for children with special needs. We've attended many family days they have arranged and funded, ranging from ten-pin bowling, Halloween parties and companion cycling. Last year they paid fully for Ross's trike.
Some of you will have supported us and charities we support in recent years whether through sponsoring me for climbing Mont Blanc, struggling my way around the London Marathon or in last year's London Triathlon (to-date over £50k for several charities including the Epilepsy Society) and I'd like to thank you all for your generosity. This year I'm joined not just by a group of friends (Emma, Tom, Duncan, Kyle and Chris) but also by my wife Clair, doing her first triathlon (and pretty much first sporting activity since leaving school...) so please support her and us by donating whatever amount you can to a very worthy cause.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and secure. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer.
Thanks for donating!
Karl
PS - if you prefer to donate to the Epilepsy Society, we also have an active fundraising page for them at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserPage.action?userUrl=triathlonforross&faId=213793&isTeam=false
