Education for the Children offers an integrated approach to learning to children living in chronic poverty in Guatemala. Over 675 children receive an education, nutritious food, healthcare, counselling & social support. This approach keeps them healthy and alert, achieving their academic best.

Story

It all started in a pub. (The Guinea in Mayfair since you ask.)  The proposal was that we should forego the joys of a week of the English winter to climb three volcanoes in Guatemala in aid of charity.  These volcanoes are dormant, right?  Er…apparently not.  Moreover, they go to nearly 4000 metres.

As we listened over a pint of Youngs to David McKee eloquently describing the excellent work of the Education For The Children Foundation which he chairs, the idea started to take hold.

The charity helps some of the poorest children in Guatemala to get an education and break out of the poverty cycle. These are children that live in ramshackle tin houses with mud floors and whose parents can't afford to feed and clothe them.

By the time the magnum of the Château Musar Bekka Valley had mysteriously disappeared, it seems we had agreed to participate in the trek.  Ten others will be doing the walk with us.

Such moments of well-being come at a price and, as you will have guessed by now, we have to justify our ascent of the volcanoes by raising some money - lots of it in fact, £2000 each.  We would be really grateful if you would help us to do this and are making it easy by using JustGiving.  Anything you give will go to the foundation.  We will be funding our own travel and accommodation costs and making our own contributions to the foundation.  If you want to know more about the work of the EFTC foundation, check out the link on the left.  Also, have a look at our photos.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

PS  For the record, Mr Christopher Wilson's bons mots which accompanied his generous contribution (but which failed to register on the site) were, "When you reach the top of your first volcano, and admire the view, you'll be like half the population of Britain on Boxing Day - watching the Crater'scape!!!"
