Peter and Jill are doing a sponsored walk across Jordan to raise money for Seventy4’s Eating Disorder Service. The group-based programme was developed in October 2008 for clients with eating problems, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge-eating and over-eating.
Although there are so many people suffering from eating disorders in the UK today, there is really very little help available for them in the community. Clients at the severe end of the spectrum (under 6 stone in weight) have NHS inpatient services available and the only other treatment tends to be in the private sector. Private services range from £2,000 to £5,000 per week.
Seventy4’s Eating Disorder programme is £165.00 per week, but we are finding that many clients cannot afford to pay for themselves. Therefore, Jill and Peter are walking to raise money to help clients to access help on a low fee. Clients who have attended the programme to date have done extremely well and without low fee provision they would have been denied their treatment.
So what will we be doing to raise the funds?
The Jordan walk takes place from the 8-13 November. Over six days the two of us will be walking from Finan to Petra. The terrain of the walk will be testing to say the least. Walking time will be between 6-7 hours per day across mountainous dirt tracks, canyon paths, Bedouin trails and valley passes.
The group of 8 will be camping along the way, probably the biggest challenge for both of us! Jill hasn’t camped since she was 10 and Peter for many years. Water in Jordan is scarce, and that includes for us, so we won’t even discuss the toilet arrangements.
We appreciate that this is not the easiest time to seek help, but we don’t believe that clients who really want to change their lives, should suffer as a consequence. We are funding ourselves to do the trip, so all monies raised will go directly to the charity. So please dig deep and help us make our trip truly worthwhile.
Thank you all for taking the time to read this and we look forward to your support.
