Bring a Lifesaving Defibrillator to Udall Grange
The Udall Grange Defibrillator Campaign started when four local residents, Jordan, Alex, Douglas and Danny, took on the Tough Mudder 10K challenge in July 2024 to raise money for a lifesaving defibrillator for the estate. Their goal was simple: to give local people the best possible chance of surviving a cardiac arrest. For Jordan, the cause is especially close to home after sadly losing his dad to a cardiac arrest.
Thanks to their fantastic efforts and the support already received, the campaign is now entering its final stage. Two more local residents have joined the fundraising effort to help raise the remaining funds needed to install a 24/7 publicly accessible defibrillator on a house near the park at the centre of the estate.
At the moment, Udall Grange does not have its own public access defibrillator. The nearest one is located at Walton Duck Pond, around a 13-minute walk away from the Udall Grange Park. In a cardiac arrest emergency, every minute matters. Survival chances decrease by around 10% for every minute without CPR and defibrillation, making a nearby defibrillator absolutely vital.
Each year, between 30,000 and 40,000 people in the UK suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, with fewer than 1 in 10 surviving. However, if a defibrillator is used within the first 3 to 5 minutes, survival rates can increase to as much as 70%. Cardiac arrests can also affect children. In England, around 617 children suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year, with 81% happening at home. Quick access to CPR and a defibrillator can increase a child's chance of survival to between 40% and 75%.
Every donation, no matter the amount, makes a difference. In fact, if every resident on the estate donated just £2, it could be enough to help make this project a reality. A small contribution today could help save a life tomorrow.
Once the defibrillator has been installed, a separate community maintenance fund will be launched to help keep it rescue-ready for years to come. Defibrillator pads need replacing every two years, or immediately if the device is used, and the battery typically needs replacing every four years. This ongoing support will ensure the defibrillator remains available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for anyone who may need it.
By supporting this campaign, you're helping to make Udall Grange a safer place for families, friends, neighbours and visitors. Together, we can bring a lifesaving defibrillator to the heart of our community and give someone the best possible chance of survival when every second counts.
