Since 2002, the Tag Rugby Trust has worked in 8 countries around the world. Post Covid, our focus is very much in Zimbabwe. We use rugby as a vehicle to “Build Futures” through social outreach programmes in the community. Sustainability and local ownership are central pillars to our approach.

Story

Hi Everyone,

I am currently trying to organize a tournament for the Tag Rugby Trust (http://tagrugbytrust.co.uk/where-we-work/uganda/).

As you will see the TRT have put on tours before to Uganda however they are trying to get their local representatives to organize more regular tournaments.

I am now playing with a lovely gentleman at the local Nile rugby club who are part of the league in Uganda called Super 8 along with 7 other teams from the capital Kampala. He is the local representative for Tag Rugby Trust in the Jinja area.

The old local representative for Tag Rugby Trust in Jinja organized a tournament for 16 schools on Friday the 23 September. However he moved on and was unable to organize the timing, structure, or fundraising after the tournament had been communicated to the schools and got the kids excited.

My friend only just finished university in Development Studies at Makerere University and volunteered to be the new tag rugby trust representative for Jinja. However he has no experience in organizing a tournament structure or funding.

Therefore I have decided to help him so that we do not disappoint so many kids and to help him moving forward obtain the kit needed locally for the Tag Rugby Trust to have a bigger, sustainable and stable presence coaching children in schools and orphanages in the area.

I am a firm believer of Rugby as a social development tool whether on the streets of Manchester with the Sports Volunteer Scheme (http://www.sport.manchester.ac.uk/sport-volunteer-scheme) with who I worked or with street kids in orphanages in Uganda!

Therefore please take a look at the Tag Rugby Trust website and if you ask me I can e-mail you materials about the TRT as well as the budget and timetable and structure for the tournament. Please see if you can help us achieve our goal.

You will see that there are elements that are vital for the tournament to go ahead – being transport for the schools furthest away to the Nile rugby club and for snacks for the boys and pitch markings.

We have kindly had water donated and also the local white water rafting company (Nile River Explorers http://raftafrica.com/) have donated trees so that we can have a tree planting ceremony before the game as the Nile rugby club was in disrepair before 2002 when TRT turned up and is now much improved but needs a lot of work still.

However if we can over the next few weeks raise enough for local Tag Rugby kit that can be used by the volunteers that go between the schools teaching the sport then we could make a lasting difference.

Already an under-14 team has been started in Jinja for the first time in its history so there is a strong commitment to building a local rugby community for the benefit of all.

Please give generously and I promise you I will send you all pictures of this tournament and also keep you regularly updated with the building of the Tag Rugby Trust locally whilst I am here and how we plan to maintain and build that presence.
