My father was the founder and
CEO of A.C.O.T.H, which was an organisation that provided a hub for legal
services and community direction for the African Community of Tower Hamlets.
This was at a time where the community had few places to turn to. My father’s
organisation rectified this and pioneered social-cohesion among Africans in the
community.
In 2006, my father’s years of
hard work and further ambitions came to a halt. He suffered from a major stroke
and was left without the ability to walk and talk properly. It was very
upsetting to see a man with such great energy and ambition to be left without
the ability to use these strengths. Fortunately, it is 2010 now and my
father determination has enabled him to make some very positive steps towards
recovery.
With an estimated
150,000 strokes in the UK each year,
there are
67,000 deaths and many suffer
from
severe disabilities. So as you
can see, my father is not the only person in this situation. I am aware
that strokes are preventable if they are caught early enough. The problem is
most people are not educated in this area and are unable to recognise a stroke.
So I will like to get the message out there, so that everyone becomes aware of
the implications of a stroke from eating less salt and maintaining a good
healthy blood pressure level.
I am running in the London Bupa
10k run to raise money for 'The Stroke Association' charity as I will like more
research to be carried out on strokes, which is the
3rd most common cause of death in the UK, after heart
disease and cancer. Together, we can put a stop to the rising number of deaths
caused by strokes.
