Anyone can get Parkinson’s. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet. Funding research into the most promising treatments, we’re getting closer to a cure. Until then, we're improving life for people with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives. Together we'll find a cure.

Story

We made it all the way to Budapest and back, please check out our blogs to see how we've done:

I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease 3 years ago at the age of 45 - it's called Young Onset PD if your diagnosed that "young". Whilst that's not great news, it's not as tough as some of the other diagnosis staring in my face at the time.

PD affects mainly the control of movements and is one of these conditions that works silently in one's brain for years - by the time you notice the first symptoms, about 80% of the damage is done - loss of dopamine producing cells in the brain. It is a degenerative condition so it will get worse. But hope is all around us - this is where you come in, in supporting the PDS in its quest to find a cure and help patients and carers in their day to day life.

To do my bit I've decided to cycle along the river Danube - 1,000 miles from Donaueschingen in Germany to Budapest/Hungary. The Danube continues for the same distance all the way to the Black Sea but for now that'll do!

Lauraine, Ash & Ian are joining in and we're taking 2 months for the trip, starting August 3 - hey, it's supposed to be fun as well and not a race. It's all about the journey and the road... My employer, Ford, has been very supportive throughout and has allowed me the time off - we'll have to see what my team thinks about it when I'm gone!

So if you think this is a quest worth supporting, please sponsor us. If you suspect we're just taking a leisure trip on the hunt for nice pubs and good beer & wine, then you found us out - but sponsor us anyway!

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Parkinson's Disease Society will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.

Ulli
