Buglife is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates, and we are actively working to save our rarest little animals. Invertebrates underpin life on earth and without them the world’s ecosystems would collapse. Saving the small things that run the planet.

Story

We’ve all decided to give up chocolate for lent! This means 40 days and 40 nights without our beloved Cadburys (Kraft), Nestle and Thornton’s continentals.

We’re not only giving up chocolate – we’re going all the way and giving up all chocolate related items. This includes that tiny chocolate swirl on the top of a cheesecake and the chocolate powder on a cappuccino. Any chocoholics will agree -It is not going to be easy!

We’re a bunch a regular chocoholics giving up something we love all because we want to help bugs! We are raising money for a small charity called Buglife that works to conserve and protect all invertebrates everything from spiders and slugs to bees and butterflies.

We have chosen Buglife because it is a tiny fly that pollinates the cocoa plant that we get our beloved chocolate from. Without this tiny insect we would not have chocolate!

Here is what we have to say about giving up chocolate:

Vicky says “My fate as a chocoholic was sealed when my Grandma worked in Rowntrees Chocolate factory and she’d bring back wonderfully large bags of waste chocolate that I used to gorge my little chubby self on.  Even today from my home you can smell the factory making chocolate, reminding me of how bloomin' fantastic chocolate is.  So this is going to be one long hard slog but in the distance there is one really big Easter egg!”

Elaine says “It is only day one and I have already started thinking about how I’m going to get the same sugar hit without pure chocolate. I’m going to get a Cadburys cream egg and bin the chocolate and just scoop out the gooey centre and just eat that bit instead”.

Dale says “I’m going to be so grumpy without chocolate. An average day for me usually starts with a chocolate based cereal (coco rocks), a chocolate biscuit for break, a chocolate bar with lunch and after eights for supper… this is going to be hard!”

Emma says “God help us all! This is what I’m calling extreme lent!”

Sherri says “My last chocolate was the violet cream it is still in my memories. This is my fourth year of doing this and it is not getting any easier.”

Zoe says “What I’m going to miss most is a chocolate biccie to dunk in my coffee while watching CSI of an evening! But, as we wouldn’t have chocolate AT ALL without bugs, it’s for a very good cause! My husband gave me a pack of chocolate bugs just yesterday but now I’ll be waiting until Easter!”

Gill says "I'm a dark chocolate junkie. My favourite brands are Mora Mora from Madagascar (via Waitrose) and the exotic French Valrhona. I seldom spend a day without consuming cocoa beans in some form, but if this helps the amazing creatures which pollinate all my favourite foods, it will be worth it".
