Hello!
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. I'm Becky, an entrepeneur by day, a special constable at night and a person that likes a challenge at all other times!
As you may know, i ran in the Flora London Marathon on behalf on the Children with AIDS charity last year (2007) in addition to climbing various mountains, including the highest mountain in Northern Africa (Mount Toubkal). These challenges were absolutely amazing and thanks to generous sponsorship (thank you everyone!), i managed to raise precious funds for the CWAC charity.
This year, I would like to continue helping this fantastic charity but i have increased the difficulty factor by doing a "Tri Challenge". Three challenges that include Marathons and Trekking (in addition to anything else adventure wise i can squeeeze in!). I am going to complete the following in 2008:
- Climb to the top of Kilimanjaro, the highest freestanding mountain in the world, standing at 5,895 metres in February.
- The Silverstone Half Marathon (13.1 miles) in March
- The London Marathon (26.2 miles) in April (in costume possibily- suggestions welcome!)
The Children with AIDS charity have kindly given me a Golden Bond Place for the 2008 Marathon. The CWAC is a outstanding charity who help children and young people affected by HIV and AIDS maintain a good quality of life, in addition to making them smile which is the most important thing of all. It is a national UK charity with the aim of working towards a future without poverty or prejudice for these children and their families.
So on the 13th April 2007 i will be running the 26.2 miles around London for this very good cause. To help me support the CWAC, i would like to ask you to sponser me- every penny counts. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Children With AIDS Charity will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
As a twist this year, i will be running the London Marathon in costume... as Supergirl! Everyone who kindly sponsors me with have the chance to have their company logo or message on my cape for all to see on the marathon circuit. Each person will have a 10cm x 10cm space on my cape to put whatever they wish be it an image, logo, scribblings or words of encouragement, in full colour. Its certainly a very different form of advertising!!
I will be keeping you all updated regularly with my comments and training antics from absolute tiredness to eating mountains of carbohydrates. Not to mention pictures from all three challenges!
Thank you in advance for your support and if you are in London on the 13th, please come and join in the fun cheering on the runners around the course. Or if you are watching it on the TV, keep an eye out for me- the one wearing the weirdest costume ever!!
Becky :-)
Someone who would like to make a difference in the world and
working with childrens charities to make more children smile!
Feb 2008 Update:
In February i climbed to the top of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which is the highest freestanding mountain in the world standing at 5896 metres tall! I travelled with a group of 6 guys who came from all over the UK. It took us 5 days to trek to the mountain and on the 6th day, we started out ascent on the peak of "Kili" at 12 midnight in the pitch black darkness armed only with headtorches to light our way. 8 hours later we reached the top and had a celebratory cup of tea to celebrate! At the top there is 50% less oxygen than at sea level and so its impossible to trek up the mountain in a hurry!! Funnily enough, the guides who lead my group to the top of Kili were the same guys that led Ben Fogel and the BBC team to the summit in 2007- so it was great to hear all their stories from that past trek and their own experiences in climbing the mountain. Throughout the trek we camped in various locations and wow... camping is certainly different! One night we had a water buffalo in the camp, grazing right outside our tents in the middle of the night. The other thing about camping on the mountain is that is really really really cold... minus -20 degrees Celsius during the night. Brrrr! I have to admit that a couple of nights i resorted to wearing all my clothes (so thats 4 pairs of trousers, 6 tops and a ski coat) within my sleeping bag in an attempt to keep warm!! All in all it was a fantastic "holiday" and one that i certainly won't forget in a hurry. The question is which mountain to tackle next... maybe Everest next year?
March 2008:
10/03/2008: Yesterday i competed in the Silverstone Half Marathon and wow, do i ache this morning! I feel like i've been run over by a bus and anything faster than a hobbling walk is certainly out of the question! Haha. I'm happy to report that i completed the course, running all the way in 2hrs 25mins, which was an improvement on my time last year. Well Done Me and a HUGE thank you to everyone who sponsored me.
April 2008:
I happy to report that i successfully completed the London Marathon yesterday! It was a fantastic day and i have written a little "report", complete with pictures on my website. Here is the link to the report: http://www.utterlyhorses.com/about/beckysblog.asp
