Story

DONATE EVEN IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT ON THE NIGHT

Opening a paper or switching on a TV instantly shows the humanitarian crisis that are arising all over the world – the Gaza conflict, the plight faced by hundreds of thousands in Zimbabwe to mention but a few.

But what about closer to home? The media coverage is not extensive enough for the international community to take notice.

As the situation worsens in North Eastern Sri Lanka, it's up to us to make a difference.

"In short, 50% of the civilian population of the Vanni is displaced; humanitarian assistance is sporadic at best; 250,000 civilians are trapped in a conflict zone, and at least 100 have been killed since January 1st; international access is virtually nil. And while on January 26th the Secretary-General was finally moved to issue a statement pleading for respect for international humanitarian law, the world couldn’t be bothered. As of January 27th, not even Relief Web was listing Sri Lanka as an on-going crisis on its home page. The dying and wounded in Sri Lanka won’t have names or faces.".

This is the reality – so come and join us as we try to raise money for those that deserve so much more.

The on-going civil war has had devastating effects on the population in the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka. Thus the main objective of ACF-UK is to provide both urgent humanitarian relief and long-term rehabilitation for children who have lost one or both parents.

In our humble opinion, food, shelter, healthcare and education are the fundamental rights of any child whether they are with their parents or not. A Child's experiences shape the rest of his or her life. Unless action is taken early, a hurt and damaged child could become a troubled adult.

ACF-UK has successfully set-up and maintained a sponsorship scheme that provides financial assistance to 350 children amongst five homes. ACF-UK has also introduced other schemes/projects of which there is more information on our website; www.arobanam.org

Our above objectives remain, however the situation has changed drastically in Vanni due to the severe fighting. A large number of civilians including women and children are caught in the middle and have sustained serious injuries, many of which have been taken to Mannar and Vavuniya hospitals. We are currently looking into ways to help these people by working with our partners, the Destitute Welfare fund.

There are some fantastic prizes in store including some lovely ladies and gentlemen all willing to be bought to spend an evening with you at venues courtesy of our generous sponsors.

Along the course of the evening, there will be other items up for auction including an exclusive professional makeover and photo shoot package and a lil' something for the boys.

Taking place at the exclusive stylish Jewel Bar in Covent Garden on 4th February 2009, you will not be disappointed with what promises to be an excellent evening.

We can only make a difference if everyone makes an effort together so come and have a fabulous time whilst raising money for an important cause.
