My story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.  I want to raise funds for a charity that is very important to me, Epilepsy Bereaved.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Epilepsy Bereaved gets your money faster and, if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.  So please sponsor me now!

Epilepsy has rooted itself into my family like many others. My brother and I all suffer from this illness - Epilepsy is a genetic disease.

If you decide to donate, you will be giving money to something that saves lives. What a lot of people do not know and are often not told by doctors, is that an epileptic fit can cause sudden death. I nearly lost my brother two years back, and unfortunately, a cousin of ours died of an Epileptic fit not so long ago.

The charity, Epilepsy Bereaved, is embedded deep in our family foundations as my Aunty , the mother of the cousin we lost, was one of its founders. This kayaking trip around the UK aims to raise as much money as possible for Epilepsy Bereaved to put towards research into epilepsy and to help save lives.  Since being diagnosed with Epilepsy myself last year it seems that everyone knows of someone who has Epilepsy.

Starting on 16th May 2009 this journey will take me over 5 months to complete, covering just over 2,500 Nautical Miles. In this time the effects of epilepsy will most certainly make its presence known to me. I originally decided to do this trip over 3 years ago.  It was something I was going to do after completing a stint with the Royal Marines.  Unfortunately, however, due to my medical condition, I am now unable to join the Marines.

I have been training for the past 8 months and have just over a week left until I set off.  I am hoping to enjoy some safe paddling. Even for a fit and healthy individual this trip would push them to their limits. But having epilepsy, well, it will be a testing time because there's that spark that loiters hidden in the brain.

Anyhow COME ON get your wallet out and sponsor me... If you have any questions regarding this trip please email me at: vaughanscroberts@googlemail.com Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your support.

Vaughan Roberts   04/01/2009

Ps. Written 14th May 2009- 2 days before setting off.  Thank you to everyone who has donated towards this charity. The supportive messages have given my confidence a boost. I am looking forward to leaving - my preparations are complete at last....I never thought this day would come around!

19th May 2009 - Due to bad weather the decision has been taken to wait for good weather. I do have some pre-nerves, but that's part and parcel doing a trip like this. Again, thank you to everyone who has supported my dream.  My family have been amazing, but I am sure my friends are probably glad to see me leave, as I have spent 8 or 9 months talking about kayaking!  Well, the talking stops from tomorrow.

20th May - Vaughan left from Camber Sands early today....off on his adventure!!!
