My story

ORBIS

I’m really very pleased that you’re reading my Great North Run fundraising page as there are around 45 million blind people in the world who cannot see what you can.  And just think, 80% of this colossal statistic is avoidable or treatable.  And did you also know that a cataract procedure costs ORBIS less than £20 ??

Why have I entered the Great North Run

As the mid point of another decade passes by I thought it was time to set myself another challenge. The Great North Run on September 20th 2009, a ( hilly !! ), half marathon,  seemed suitably demanding. While the mind is willing, the body’s taking a little coaxing.  To run for a deserving charity is a great stimulus.

Why I’m Supporting ORBIS

Preventable blindness is a tragedy.  For those of who can see vision must surely be the most precious of senses.  I cannot imagine what it must be like to be blind.

For millions blindness is a result of circumstance.  Preventable and often easily treatable if the appropriate medical facilities & skills were available. Also, blindness is neither a high profile or heavily advertised & marketed charitable activity

Having had months to think about a charity to support I’ve formed the opinion that blindness in developing countries is frequently a result of circumstance.  It is not necessarily a direct result of conflict or politics as are many human tragedies.  Albeit health, hygiene & education are not national priorities in such locations.

ORBIS is a world wide charity providing education, training & surgical facilities locally in isolated developing world locations.  Take a look at  www.orbis.org .

We in developed countries where medical resources are so easily available take vision for granted.  Could I ask you to consider making a donation to ORBIS and help restore vision to people who would otherwise have no chance to see again.

Set yourself a challenge – how many people can you help see again ??

Knowing how generously you can support ORBIS will be a huge incentive to me.

Congratulations, hopefully i'll have the knees to join you next year. Donation by Benjamin Lovedale 09/11/09
