Lands End to John O'Groats · 13 August 2007

The National Autistic Society is here to transform lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people. There is still so much to do to increase opportunities, reduce social isolation and build a brighter future for autistic people. With your help, we can make it happen.

Story

Well this is it - the big one. Lands End to John O'Groats. The training has been gruelling and the crashes have been a set back not to mention painful! But now the stabilisers are off and the Grande Depart is just days away. On Friday 24 August I will be setting off from deepest, darkest Cornwall heading for the untamed Highlands of Scotland. I'm aiming to cycle between 70 to 80 miles per day in order to finish on Friday 8 September having covered approximately 1000 miles.

At the age of 45 (just) and having completed various one day and multi day charity rides I decided that a real challenge was required and not wishing to venture too far afield LE-JOG seems to be the natural choice.

The cause, I hope you will agree, is a good one. My youngest son, the apple of my eye,has Aspergers Syndrome which is part of the autistic spectrum. Autism (including Asperger's) is a lifelong develeopmental disability. It is a condition which has varying degrees of severity and effects an estimated 535,000 people in the UK. It is characterised by difficulties in forming social relationships, problems with verbal and non-verbal communication and development of strong narrow obsessional interests.

The National Autistic Society provides a wide range of services to help people with autism and Asperger syndrome live their lives with as much independence as possible.
