My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

In order to complete the Welsh 3000s Challenge we were required to have been at the top of all 15 of the mountains over 3000 ft in Wales, on foot, within the space of 24 hours! Harder than the Three Peaks.

*UPDATE AFTER THE EVENT*

Due to the adverse weather conditions we experienced on the very first peak we were eventually unable to complete our attempt. Our apologies to everyone who donated but, as I'll explain, we did try!

Starting at 5:50 am, our route was to take us over one of the most difficult peaks at the start called Crib Goch. From our research we were led to believe there was a 'hiking' path along the top but found there to be a ridge which we had to climb up to. As we did so a fine mist appeared (cloud) giving us visibility of about 10-15 metres. We found that we had to straddle the ridge with a foot and sheer drop either side. We were unable to put our waterproofs on as there really wasn't much room to manoeuvre.
We were certain that any mistakes would have resulted in death. With more experience of these surfaces and much better weather conditions we probably would have fared much better.

We took the decision to come down from the ridge about two thirds along for our own safety as we were getting soaked.
In the process we had to circle just underneath our second peak. We are counting it in because of the excessive amount of climbing done in negotiating around it. Here we lost a lot of time.

Next was Snowdon, our third peak, much easier. Still wet, but there was a path for a start!
Sadly not much of a view from the top.
Our descent was to be off the beaten track to allow us a quicker but steeper path through to Nant Peris and then on to Elidir Fawr our fourth peak.

Before this, we assessed our feet and a couple of us were feeling a bit sore. The soaking earlier had caused some feet to shrivel like giant white prunes making them extremely tender.
At this point we had each taken a few slips and bumps bruising/scratching/cutting ourselves a bit.
With this in mind we still attempted Elidir Fawr.

On the descent the light was starting to disappear. We had taken our time due to sore feet and in negotiating the loose screed on a steep slope.

Overall we had been on our feet for a total time of 16 hours and 27 minutes.

We feel we achieved a great deal with the conditions that we were in (both weather and physical) and are basically glad to be alive.

I would like to thank everyone who donated money to our cause, that donated kit, who supported us and got us ready for the day, and lastly I want to thank the other three guys for their support and strength for pushing through and getting across as much as we did.

This time next year there is already talk of attempting a different challenge.

Our designated charity, the Jigsaw Trust/School, would still appreciate any donations you can make which you can do via this page or by visiting their website at http://www.jigsawschool.co.uk.

Thank you!
