Daisy (13), Polly (11), Dominic and Shoonagh (indeterminate ages!) will be walking 67.4 miles from their home near Winchester to their cousin Felix's house near Brighton over 4 days in August. This is to raise money for the Royal Marsden's research into Neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer.
Felix White, the girls' 4 year old cousin, was diagnosed with
Stage 4 Neuroblastoma earlier this year. He has so far had 10 rounds of chemotherapy, and this will be followed by a major operation, stem-cell bone marrow transplant and further high-dose chemo and radiotherapy.
The drugs Felix is being given have nasty side-effects, including
severe weight-loss and mucositis, which is ulceration of his mouth and
digestive tract, often resulting in prolonged periods of
hospitalisation, away from his big sister and twin brother.
More funds are urgently needed to try and increase the survival rate of this devastating disease, and new drugs that don't cause such debilitating side-effects. Prof. Andy Pearson, who is treating Felix at the Royal Marsden, is at
the forefront of global research into childhood cancer. He is certain
that, with sufficient funds, new drugs can be found to treat and cure
Neuroblastoma. He and his amazing team need our money, which is why the
Hubble family are doing this walk.
