Duchess of Kent House (hospice) has 16 in-patient beds, day therapy facilities (3 days a week), out-patients and a Family Support Service (bereavement), providing palliative (hospice) care for the population of west and central Berkshire. In the last 15 years over 12,000 patients have been treated and cared-for by a team of 50 (full-time equivalent) consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, admin & site staff, etc. This care continues after death for those relatives who wish it through the FSS. All care is provided free of charge, according to need. As with all parts of the National Health Service there is never enough money to pay for all aspects of what we technically call ‘specialist palliative care’. This is where the independent charity Duchess of Kent House Trust comes in. Since 2002, the Duchess of Kent House Trust (independent charity) has raised £1,500,000 for the unit to pay for the Family Support Service, 2 in-patient beds otherwise not available, the dietician, chaplaincy, psychologist, aromatherapist, and equipment. My story

Hello everybody, Graham here, thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

From 20th April to 7th May I am walking the Macmillan Way (290 miles across England from Boston Lincolnshire to Abbotsbury Dorset) in memory of my wife, Julie, who died from terminal kidney cancer in November 2006.

During her illness and at her death Julie received tremendous support from the staff at Duchess of Kent House and this is to thank those people by continuing to fund their work. Julie visited Abbotsbury, at the end of the walk, in July 2006 and we made a promise that I would do this walk for her. She was a keen walker herself and fully approved of this way of raising funds for Duchess of Kent House Trust. You can read about progress at www.walkforjulie.org.uk

Update 30th April 2007

Met up with Graham in Stow at the weekend and have just spoken to him again tonight. He's doing well and thanks everyone for their support. Over halfway now - read his daily diary on the website to find out more. We thoroughly enjoyed walking with him on Saturday and Sunday. Ali (sister)

I'm back - I've completed the whole walk 290 miles coast to coast. I have met a lot of you on the walk. And there's been a fantastic support for both charities on this website andby post/cash. So it looks as though we'll raise over £5,000 for both charities combined. Thanks everyone
