I'm walking to raise funds for St Oswald's Hospice, in memory of my Mum, Esther King.
Esther was really my husband's mum but we were so very close and as she always said, the term "in-law" was too cold so she called me her daughter instead.
Esther was only 68 when she died on August 29th this year. She had battled bravely with secondary cancer for two very long years and, up until just 6 weeks before she died was lovingly cared for at home by my Dad, Pete. When she was still well, she went to St Oswald's as a day patient on Friday - she should have really gone on Thursday's, but as she said "that day is for old ladies" so she joined in with the bright young things instead.
When it all became too much, St Oswald's was there for them. She spent her remaining weeks at the hospice, and she could not have been in a better place. She was cared for beautifully, nothing was a trouble and everything possible was done for her. The most poignant thing Esther said was that they had lifted the burden of care from Pete and given her her husband back so that they could once again be a husband and wife very much in love.
Esther always thought of others before herself; before St Oswald's she was is hospital for two weeks and she refused to let our two little ones, Charlie (3) and Isabelle (6 months) visit as she thought it would frighten them. St Oswald's was completely different. The children were made so welcome that Charlie asked every day if he could go and see granny in the hospice (although that may have had something to do with the hot chocolate and the fish tank in the foyer). Esther was just overjoyed that she could cuddle the kids, and she did so almost every day until the day before she passed away.
St Oswald's is a wonderful place, giving love & peace to those who need it most. Please be as generous as you can.
