Story

PLEASE SUPPORT OR WALK WITH ME AS I ONCE AGAIN DO THE MANCHESTER MIDNIGHT WALK!

Hi Everyone,

When I was asked last year if I would support the Manchester Midnight Walk to raise funds for a local charity, St Ann's Hospice, I didn't hesitate. It's a wonderful cause and I was astonished to learn that it costs over £9m to keep the hospice open each year and that the majority of this money comes from the general public. The hospice has to raise £16,000 a day themselves just to keep their services running so it's vitally important that St Ann's gets continuous support.

After taking part in the 10k walk (amazingly organised by a small team of dedicated fundraisers who really know how to put on a well organised event!), I decided to find out as much as possible about what the hospice does and visited them in October last year.

I met with various staff including Ward Manager Sian Burgess who was keen to point out that although the charity was called a hospice, it is not only a place where people come to die. Sian explained to me that St Ann's does so much more than inpatient care. They provide day therapy and supportive outpatients for patients living at home and they also provide care in some areas directly in people's own homes. Around a third of patients return home after receiving care from the hospice.

I was delighted to be asked to be an Ambassador for St Ann's Hospice and whenever possible I try to do what I can to help raise the profile of services at St Ann's. I feel I have joined a close-knit and dedicated team.

The Manchester Midnight Walk has raised, net, nearly half a million pounds in it's first three years making it their biggest and single most important event. It's vital that the public help support this annual fun event either by sponsoring me or walking with me on 2 July. And it really is fun.

There's plenty of ways to register, either go online at manchestermidnightwalk.org.uk or call 0161 498 3631.

Let's surpass last year's results, even in the difficult economic climate we still find ourselves in.
