We’ve been improving the lives of those who work or have worked at sea, and their families, for over 100 years. Established in 1917 as The King George's Fund for Sailors, to support the families of seafarers lost at sea during World War One, we support seafarers throughout their career and beyond.

Story

Thanks for visiting my page, I do hope that you are able to sponsor me to run the London Marathon in April.

This is a very simple and quick way to sponsor and and as an added bonus UK tax payers will get an extra 28 % added to their sponsorship by the UK Government.

I am running for the above organisation, the King George Fund for Sailors. Further information about their work is contained on their website. Please drop by and take a look.

Alistair Finlayson is a fisherman who lives in one of the UK's most remote communities in Ness on the Island of Lewis. Very sadly his youngest daughter Nicola, aged 5, was earlier this year diagnosed with a rare form of stomach cancer and was immediately transferred to Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow for intensive treatment, involving prolonged chemotherapy followed by an operation to remove a tumour. The operation has taken place and all the signs are that it has proved successful. However, Nicola is likely to remain in hospital until September. Her mother, Tina, has been with her in hospital throughout leaving Alastair at home looking after their young son. The Fishermen's Mission has come to the aid of the Finlayson family. The Edinburgh representative visits Nicola in hospital at least once a week Back in Lewis, the Stornoway Port Missioner John Hamilton has provided welcome practical support and pastoral care. He has raised almost £5,000 to support the family which is finding money very tight since Mr Finlayson has been off work, away from the fishing, since February looking after his son with periodic visits to his daughter. KGFS provides a key source of money to underpin the services which the Fishermen's Mission provides to the UK's Fishing Community. There is no doubt that without the help of the Mission's people, a Lewis fisherman and his family would have found it much more difficult to cope with the serious illness of a young child. The KGFS Grant to the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen in 2003 was £85,000........... I am now eight weeks ( 01/03/05) in to my training schedule and hope to complete the Marathon in a sub four hour time. Many thanks for stopping by. Wayne Ballinger
