Yorkshire 3 Peaks · 15 August 2009

Douglas Macmillan Hospice (Dougie Mac) is the only hospice in Staffordshire supporting Children, Young Adults & Adults. Care is given to patients who are living with a life-limiting illness at our two sites and in the community. We also provide support for patients families and their carers.

Story

The Wardell Armstrong Team successfully completed the Yorkshire Three peaks Challenge on Saturday 15 August 2009 in aid of the Douglas MacMillan Hospice.

Weather conditions can best be described as atrocious with rain and wind battering us for about 8 out of the 12 hours resulting in a swollen river crossing (many amusing moments!), flooded bogs (and not just in the car park), and generally everyone becoming caked in peat and soaked to the skin. A typical August day in Yorkshire…….

We actually never even saw the 3 peaks because they were cloaked in mist virtually all day. With immaculate timing the weather cleared in the early evening which admittedly allowed a very pleasant time recuperating outside at the Crown Inn in Horton-in-Ribblesdale after the event, accompanied by the medical administration of a few beers!

Some 27 people comprised the Wardell Armstrong team and a majority completed it, with a few non-finishers due to the usual injuries of knackered knees or pulled muscles! We also had a small group who completed an "alternative" 3 Peaks challenge due to a minor(!) navigation error in the mist on Pen-y-Ghent!

Our 3 lead "mad men" completed the event in 9 hours and all finishing members of the team completed in the 12 hours, give or take 5 minutes. Mind you, very few were able to walk the next day....

So, a good result for the team and a good result for the "Dougie Mac". To date we have exceeded our target of £2000 with more still coming in which is great.

We thank all our sponsors very much for their support it is very much appreciated - both by us as a team and by the Douglas MacMillan.

It goes without saying, but I will say it anyway, that if you have not yet donated and are overcome with the urge to do so, the “just giving” link is set out below!

Once again, many, many, thanks

Regards

Colin
