On May 4th 2005, Richard Barnes and Sam & Ben Towndrow set off on an audacious challenge to cycle 3,000 miles to and from Africa in 30 days. They were sent on their way by Antonia Okonma, star of ITV's Bad Girls. You can keep up with their progress at www.RaceforAfrica.com
The Race for Africa team are raising money for Excellent Development, a charity that builds small scale dams and plants trees in Africa. The WaterRelief team will cycle the 3,000 mile return journey in an incredible 30 days.
Richard, Sam and Ben have been cycling together since they were eight years old, passing their cycling proficiency tests at Black Combe School in Cumbria, and training and competing together throughout their time at Millom Comprehensive.
The dams we build cost around £5,000 and provide an average of 1,000 people with clean water. Give someone clean water for £5 - or even an average family for £30. One dam saves around 200,000 miles of walking per year for subsistence farmers in Africa.
