<p><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="color: #800080; font-size: x-small;">Thank you for visiting our fund-raising page.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: #800080;">Natalie, Irene and June are preparing to do the Women's 10K in Glasgow on Sunday the 13th May 2012. We are raising money for the fourth consecutive year for the <em>Let Us Shine</em> Charity.<a href="http://www.letusshine.org/">(</a></span></span><a href="http://www.letusshine.org/">www.letusshine.org<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: #800080;">).</span></span></a><a href="http://www.letusshine.org/"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: #800080;"> </span></span></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: #800080;">In 2012 the money we raise will help fund the construction of a <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>water bore hole</strong></span><strong></strong> which will be owned by Let Us Shine and built on its private land. Northern Ghana and surrounding areas have been badly affected by drought over the past few months and as a result the Let Us Shine girls have had to survive on rationed water which they collect from a public well many miles away from the school. This has affected their daily lives significantly and has made daily tasks such as cooking and washing extremely arduous.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: #800080;">Over the past three years we have managed to raise over £1500 which has helped build a new classroom and accommodation block as well as supplying classroom materials and textbooks for the girls.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: #800080;">The Let Us Shine charity's founder and director is Fiona <span class="mark">Marra</span>, a pharmacist from Glasgow. Her passion for universal education for all and the desire to see children reach their potential, formulated the structure and driving force behind the projects now carried out by Let Us Shine. Her commitment to the charity means that no one in the UK receives a salary, all money raised is invested into the projects in Ghana.</span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: #800080; font-size: x-small;">Let Us Shine opened its first project in Ghana with the Let Us Shine <span class="mark">Kpandai</span> Girls school. <span class="mark">Kpandai</span> (pronounced <span class="mark">Pand</span>-eye) is a small town situated in the very poor Northern Region of Ghana. Children begin farming from the age of 3 and less than ten percent of children in this area make it to high school. Class sizes in schools that do exist exceed 120 and often seventy percent are male. The government do supplement early education but it is not enough for most families with an average of seven children per family some with some children with as many as 12-13 siblings.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="color: #800080; font-size: x-small;">Natalie <span class="mark">has volunteered twice</span> at the Let U</span></span><span style="color: #800000;"><span style="color: #800080; font-size: x-small;">S Shine school and Irene volunteered in Oct 2011 (see Natalie's blog <a href="http://www.nataliewatters.blogspot.co.uk/">www.nataliewatters.blogspot.co.uk</a>)</span></span><span style="color: #800000;"></span></p>
