Only 22% of the population in TA Mphuka has access to safe water (based on Government of Malawi standards). This means that the majority of people are fetching water from unsafe sources that carry the risk of disease.

Diarrhoea is very common in the area- particularly in children under five- its prevalence is exacerbated by poor hygiene and sanitation practices- only 26% of households are currently using improved pit latrines.
